Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse, WA

On the day our son turned 7, we were visiting the Busselton area.  We had told him he could choose to visit anywhere he wanted and he keenly insisted on climbing inside a lighthouse.  That is how we ended up at Cape Naturalise Lighthouse, and we definitely didn’t regret it.  Our family had a great afternoon, and it led to many discussions about lighthouses and marine communication.

There is free parking as you arrive, and the visitor centre is right there. From there you can choose just to walk the short distance up to view the lighthouse or speak with the people at the visitor centre and organise your tour.  We walked up initially and then did the tour.  There isn’t much to see unless you go inside the lighthouse as the shrubbery really conceals the view.

The lighthouse is not a high intensity climb, all of the small children we took with us managed it without any complaints.  The view from the top is spectacular and the guide was so helpful and informative.  We had very curious children and adults who asked all sorts of questions and she was able to satisfy most of them.  She was also very patient and enthusiastic with the kids.

We expected there to be a lot more historical information than was available.  We were informed later that many of the cottages are being refurbished, and soon there will be a further museum and cafe facilities available.  It will definitely make a difference.

Recommendations

If you are wanting to climb inside the lighthouse, definitely book ahead.  The lighthouse is quite small and they only run tours of up to 10 people.  Our group was an entire tour and we had to wait about half an hour for them to slot us in.
